Having never sold a bar of soap in my life, I moved to England, from Hong Kong 7 years ago with the gem of an idea that I could set up a business selling toiletries made in China to Hotels. From a single room in a humble cottage in Bedfordshire, I started business as a sole trader. In the early days of Pacific Direct I was sales, accounts, administration, operations, shipping, post, reception, cleaning and the Managing Director! To begin with I worked through the "Hotel's" section of the yellow pages to make appointments.

Having never been to London before, I found myself ready for my first meeting standing on Park Lane thinking — "How exciting, I am on the monopoly board." Even more exciting was the fact that, to my surprise, my first customer followed my first appointment and The Dorchester placed their order for pre-threaded sewing kits.

After this success I thought selling hotels amenities was easy — my next step was to learn how our goods were manufactured so I volunteered to spend time living in China to learn how are goods are made. I then r eturned to the UK armed with samples and bags of enthusiasm.

During my first year I roamed round Britain in my Ford Fiesta 1.1 doing 44,000 miles, meeting many helpful hoteliers and selling - £ 108,000 worth of business.

Today Pacific Direct has come a long way. We are a 22 strong team of people in the United Kingdom with manufacturing plants and sales offices based in four countries. We now supply a wide range of disposable amenities to some of the most prestigious clients in the world Including Hotels, Airlines and Cruise Lines.

Items we supply range from a simple standard unwrapped janitorial soap to luxury slippers and branded toiletries found in 5* Hotels. Now an almost 4 million turnover company with a factory in China, and an office in the USA. Pacific Direct is very much looking forward to the millennium. I think one calls this "Expanding the boundaries of business"!
