New Luxury Mandarin Oriental, Boston Offers RCN's Digital And High Definition Cable Television In Luxury Guestrooms, Apartments, Condos & Retail Shops RCN's Fiber-Based Network Provides Superior Picture Quality And Dedicated Broadband Connectivity

HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI), a leading provider of all-digital television, high-capacity data, and voice services to residential, business customers and service providers, announced today the signing of a multi-year contract and service launch with Mandarin Oriental, Boston. RCN's All-Digital and High Definition (HD) Cable TV service is available in 136 guestrooms and 12 luxury suites, as well as the condominiums, apartments and retail stores located within the hotel. Additionally, RCN is providing a dedicated data network connection to serve as the hotel's failsafe for Internet connectivity.

"Our guestrooms and suites have been designed with remarkable attention to detail and outstanding features, from soaking tubs and designer linens to advanced technology including in-room High Definition Televisions and 24/7 high speed access to the Internet," said Susanne Hatje, General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Boston.

Guests at the Mandarin Oriental have access to over 80 free-to-guest channels, including HD, with additional reserved channels for the hotel's own insertion. RCN, with its own fiber-based network, also deployed a redundant connection to re-route Internet traffic in the event of connectivity failure.

"We required a set of solutions that would easily integrate with our video technology partners, accommodate our own inserted channels, deliver more HD programming and insulate our guests from any Internet connectivity interruptions. RCN engineered a solution to do what other providers couldn't – satisfy a host of needs at a rate that fit within our budget," added Hatje.

"We are extremely pleased to bring RCN's expertise across all three business units together to provide a unique solution for the Mandarin Oriental," said PK Ramani, RCN Business Services President. "We are expertly equipped to handle the individual requirements of hotels in our major-market footprint, and we are comfortable delivering solutions across a variety of content and distribution technologies, including the ability to work with service integrators, Video on-Demand (VOD) providers and third party content insertion."

"This deal highlights RCN's core strength, the ability to leverage our deep metro fiber infrastructure to serve high-end telecom demand across multiple products and customer segments," said RCN President and CEO, Peter Aquino. "Our strategy of diversifying RCN's asset portfolio over the past few years has positioned us extremely well to compete successfully in both good and difficult economic environments. We continue to see growth opportunities in all of our markets and business units, and remain focused on utilizing RCN's broad, diverse network to deliver high quality, flexible, and cost effective solutions for our customers."
