Cooper Carry-Designed Hyatt Place Opens

118,000-square-foot hotel, located in Washington, D.C., features inventive design

The 200-room Hyatt Place Washington, D.C. / U.S. Capitol, designed by internationally recognized design firm Cooper Carry and developed by The JBG Companies, has opened. The 118,854-square-foot, limited-service hotel is located in the northern portion of the NOMA district, an up-and-coming vibrant mixed-used neighborhood in Washington, D.C. located less than a mile from Union Station.

“Cooper Carry really pushed the envelope with the design of the Hyatt Place Washington, D.C. / U.S. Capitol, which is one-of-a-kind for a limited-service hotel,” said Andrea Schaub, director at Cooper Carry. “Our innovative design redefines how hotels can adhere to brand standards but create something aesthetically unique. The timeless, yet modern building sets the precedent for future select service hotels to come.”

Cooper Carry fit the Hyatt Place precisely to the city’s 130-foot height restriction, eliminated parking and incorporated creative angles and interesting spaces in rooms, while maintaining the specific Hyatt brand standards.

“Cooper Carry has exceeded our expectations with their imaginative use of space and incorporations of design elements such as limestone and exposed concrete walls to set this Hyatt Place apart from other limited-service hotels in the area,” said Kai Reynolds, a JBG partner.

“Cooper Carry accomplished our goal of creating a property that would communicate a timeless feel in an urban setting.”

The hotel includes approximately 1,600 square feet of meeting space, the signature Hyatt Place dining experience, a large state-of-the-art fitness facility, and an outdoor pool and terrace that overlook the more intimate setting along N Street. The building was designed to LEED Silver standards and features many sustainable design concepts such as water-reducing fixtures, energy efficient equipment and lighting, and a rain-screen exterior cladding system.
